The Very Highest Quality Diamonds...
Natural fancy coloured diamonds are very rare and expensive. Brown is probably the last colour one would imagine for a diamond, and normally one of the lowest preference colours. It is possible however for brown diamonds to be attractive. Some brown hues are more appealing then others. The emerald cut brown diamond in our photograph is an attractive coffee colour. Currently it is available as an unmounted stone. We plan to set it in the centre of a three-stone diamond ring, with a round white diamond at each side.
Is It Natural?
Most fancy coloured diamonds will be natural, as brown is not a high preference colour, although it is likely that enhancement processes exist which could produce brown colours. Any brown diamonds we offer will be natural unless we state otherwise.
In our first twenty years of designing diamond rings, we had only owned 5 coloured diamonds, four of which were certificated as natural. Now that treated stones are available, we intend to make full use of their inherent beauty in our rings. although we have never seen any enhanced (treated) brown diamonds, so our stock selection will never be very extensive. Many "white" or "colourless" diamonds are actually slightly yellow or brown, although this is often almost imperceptible. Light brown diamonds are quite common, can be very attractive, and offer good value for money. The term fancy is applied to intensely coloured or particularly attractive hues. Natural fancy brown diamonds remain so rare, that we have only seen and bought one single piece so far!
Quality for quality, fancy coloured diamonds are more generally expensive than ordinary near-colourless ones. Because we have seen so few fancy brown diamonds, it is not yet possible for us to state with certainty whether the same applies to brown ones, but the one we are currently offering certainly would cost more if it were near-white.
What About Other Brown Gemstones?
Why bother to get so excited about brown diamonds, when we could use smoky quartz or brown sapphires instead? The very best sapphires are quite expensive, and they still do not have the sparkle that brown diamonds possess. In addition even though sapphires are very hard and durable, diamonds are many times harder and even more durable. Quartz is less brilliant and much softer.
Pendants & Ear-Rings
We have also made a few pendants and ear-rings using fancy coloured diamonds, but not brown so far. We have never yet seen a matching pair of fancy brown diamonds, so it could be a long time before we can create a pair of fancy brown diamond ear-rings.
